Delay in treating malaria, especially P. falciparum the species of the parasite that is the main cause of the severe forms of the disease may result in rapid deterioration in the patient s condition, together with the development of a number of life-threatening complications. This handbook is an updated edition of the Management of Severe Malaria, providing new and revised practical guidance on the diagnosis and management of severe malaria. After outlining the general nursing care needed by these patients, it considers in turn the possible complications, including coma, convulsions, severe anemia, hypoglycemia, and pulmonary edema, and gives specific and concise advice on their management. While intended primarily for clinical professionals and other responsible health staff for clinical professionals and other centers with inpatients facilities in malaria-endemic countries, it will also be of practical use to physicians in non-endemic areas, who are increasingly having to deal with patients infected during visits to malarious areas.

1.       What I like about the book?:

The book’s design is very appealing. There are tabs at the lateral edge of the book to indicate the chapters. Thus, I did not have to bookmark the pages as it is already easy to find information needed. Other than that, I also like the size of the book. It is very compact making it easy to carry or portable for quick revisions. 2.       Brief content of the book:

The book provides information regarding the guide to diagnose as well as the management of severe malaria cases. It also provides the clinical features of malaria in children and pregnant women. Management of malaria is detrimental to provide good prognosis for the patient. This book is intended for the use of clinical professionals but can easily be used by others.

3.       Does it suit you or any other programs and

why?: Currently, I am taking MBBS, we learn various systems to help with our journey in treating others. We also learn Haematology, and one of the viral infections

in this system is Malaria. Thus, this book is very helpful in understanding management of malaria. I can also use it for PBLs regarding this topic as it is packed with the fundamental points that I need to know. Even if I wasn’t a medical student, I think this book would still benefit me as a Malaysian. As we all know, Malaysia is a tropical country which has a number of cases of Malaria. Thus, it is important to read up to avoid being ignorant. In conclusion, this book is personally very beneficial for me as well as to the general public.

4.       Would you recommend this book to your

colleagues and why?: Yes. This is because this book as I have mentioned before, has a very unique design which allures me to read it. It is also easy to understand. The information packed in this book is all the knowledge we will require in management of Malaria. Other than that, it is important for my colleagues to equipped themselves with knowledge regarding malaria as Malaria cases are still rampant in Malaysia.
